Lejla Maltija composes and performs original music based on melodies and themes from Malta's rich cultural heritage. Lyrics are a wistful tale of Malta's glorious past and less fortunate moments in the islands' history. As the name implies it brought chocolate lovers from all over Malta to enjoy a mildly warm evening. Lejla Malta was there to check it out. .
The pros: A large chocolate Titanic and traditional Maltese bus. There was also Hamrun's symbolic chocolate sculpture with the famous band clubs' instruments mainly drums and brass together with the Hamrun Spartans' emblem. It was also romantic to find a small orchestra playing, "a Whiter Shade of Pale," in a quieter street, next to the Scouts Building. Back on the main street there were two chocolate painters showing off their skills. There was also a chocolate sculpture coming to life. In Lejla Maltija's opinion these were the main highlights. There was an interesting History of Chocolate exhibition and a stand with information about the health benefits of chocolate.

Even the shops were open all night. There were also hawkers and sellers taking the opportunity to advertise their products and taking advantage of the nearing Christmas and Halloween festivities. There were more cribs and Christmas / Halloween related products than Chocolate products. Why could there not be a policy, as in other festivals, that all sellers have to produce wares connected or endorsing the chocolate theme if they want to participate? The same goes for the band clubs and other organisations collecting money for their activities. Be more creative. It pays.

We know that the world loves Belgian chocolate, but what about giving a Maltese one a try?
An original Lejla Maltija track, the music is by Mario Cordina recorded at Anidroc Studios. The Video is obviously filmed in Malta by Anidroc Film for Lejla Maltija. The locations include Għar Dalam, the cave filled with prehistoric remains and the Blue Grotto in Żurrieq with it's red coral and crystal clear waters. The Music

Based on Maltese melodic chords, it is dominated by guitars and hand claps for percussion. Most of the instruments are performed by Mario Cordina together with the vocals. The instruments include the zaqq, a Maltese bagpipe instrument made out of sheepskin, bass and a bass drum which is basically a chair cushion. The music is by Lejla Maltija under the A.M.P. label.
The Video
An Anidroc Film for Lejla Maltija the video is directed by Mario Cordina and Jagoda Beltrani. The video shows one of the many daily boat trips round the Blue Grotto and other caves in the area, together with fish and fauna in the Malta National Aquarium in Buġibba. The intro and ending feature the Għar Dalam cave with it's bones and skeletons from a prehistoric age. The video ends with Mario humorously tapping an aquarium glass seemingly hypnotising the fish and the boat trip guide inviting the tourists to check out the echo in the Blue Grotto interior.
The Caves
The Caves
The caves of the Maltese people, lit up by coral.
Clear water, pure water,
The 'Figolla' is an almond filled pastry often in the form of animals or whatever one may fancy. Keeping the person or child who will receive the sweet in mind, they can accordingly take on the shape of a car or a musical instrument, a character from a fairy tale or a romantic heart. The traditional lamb has now been replaced with football team emblems, even what they call 3D shapes taking over the flat sweet.

Has anyone asked the risen Christ the question 'Which shape of Figolla would you like?'
This is the ironic tale behind the tune in Maltese.

'X'Figolla Jrid?' was recorded at Anidroc Studios and produced by A.M.P. for Lejla Maltija.
Lyrics and translation:

"Karnival”
Lyrics: Mario Cordina

Il-Karnival ....
Ir-rota ddur fuq il-kukkanija,
Il-fama tperper fuq il-belt Maltija.
Tfiegħ ta perlini u il-prinjolata,
Jinġabru il-follol biex jaraw il-parata.

“The wheel turns on the kukkanija,” (A traditional competitive game where a wheel was placed on a wooden pole greased with fat. Men tried to get to the top of the slippery pole to grab prizes hanging on the wheel.)
“The fama flutters on the Maltese city,” (a flag which was the main prize up for grabs on the kukkanija.)
“The throwing of perlini and prinjolata,” (Perlini almond sweets, used to be thrown onto the public and the carnival traditional sweet, the prinjolata.)
“The crowds throng to watch the parade.”

Darba ir-re tal-karnival,
Kienet xbiegħa fuq-dgħajsa mit-twal,
Iż-zeffiena kienu il-baħħara,
Il-maskarati u il-karrijiet ta-dara.

“Once the King of Carnival,” (In the past, the King of Carnival, now the triumphal float that leads the parade.)
“Was an effigy (statue) on a long boat,” (used to be a statue, probably of pagan and/or Roman religion, that used to be carried over the land back to the sea for the new shipping season. In fact the float is called a 'karru,' a carrier used for carrying boats, like a trailer.)
“The dancers where the seamen,” (In Roman times these boats would be accompanied by the seamen wearing masks.)
“The maskarati and the floats of the past.”

Illum, illum,
illum il-Karnival.

“Today is the day of the carnival.”

Stenna, stenna, dieħel il-qabar,
Bir-ragel tat-tiben taħt il-qamar.
Matt-tokki ta nofs il-lejl,
Jintem il-karnival għalfejn.

“Wait, wait, the coffin enters.” (A long lost tradition held that a coffin bearing a man made of straw would be carried into the city at the end of carnival.)
“The straw man under the light of the moon.”
“At the stroke of midnight,”
“The carnival ends, oh why?” (The carnival used to end at midnight with the burning of the coffin. This tradition was replaced with the burning of the King Carnival float. Today, however due to the mechanical and electric parts built into the float, this tradition has been abandoned.)

Parati, prinjolati, karrijiet u maskerati,
Il-buffun u ‘l balalu, il-karnival tagħna m’għawnx bħalu.
Illum, illum,
Ilum il-karnival.

"Parades and prinjolati, the floats and the masquarades,"
"The buffoon and the idiot, there is no carnival like others."
"Today is the karnival."
Below is some information about the track, the story behind it, the lyrics, and the track itself on sound cloud. Finally there is information and pictures about the making and filming of the video and the video itself.

L'Aħħar Sajda is the classical story of the Old Man and the Sea, where the fisherman meets his fate. The title of the song means 'The Last Fishing' trip. Alas, although this is not based on a true story, it is inspired by many such accounts from the history of fishermen around the island, especially in Marsaxlokk which is Malta's largest fishing village, even to the present day. The seas around Malta are beautiful and calm, but the islanders all know that the sea has a soft belly but a hard headed stomach. 'Zaqqu ratba imma rash iebsa', so they say. Here are the lyrics with as faithful a translation as possible in English.

L’Aħħar Sajda
Lejla Maltija
Kliem (lyrics) : Mario Cordina

Għajnejn il-luzzu lemħu fil-baħar,
Il-konżijiet lesti għall-kalar,
Imma is-sajjied kollhu sabar,
Jaqra il-ħin maż-żifna tal-qamar.

The eyes of the luzzu, glimpsed on the sea (the Maltese luzzu a traditional fishing boat always is embellished with an eye on either end of the prow, a custom hailing from Malta's Phoenician and pagan past.)
The konzijiet (gill nets or seines) ready for hauling,
But the fisherman is all patience,
He reads the time in the dance of the moon.

Jaf li bil-lejl tiċċassa il-lampuka,
Araħ irejjex mal-kanniżżata.
Hekk kif titkala ix-xibka,
Il-kurtuni jintlew xalata.

He knows that the lampuka (dolphin fish) stares at night, (is less lively at night.)
See him feathering next to the kannizata, (using the feather to skim the surface. This is a method used by fishermen to lure the dolphin fish. The kannizata is a bait assembly common amongst Maltese fishermen.)
As soon as the net is pulled up,
See the kurtuni fill up with the feast. (The kurtuni are special wooden canals built both to support the hull and to hold the fish.)

Terġa tkala u terfa,
Il-ħut jaqbeż, jaqbeż, jitfarfar.
Itfa ix-xibka u irranġa,
Il-ħut jaqbeż, jaqbeż, jitfarfar.
Imma kollox għalxejn.

Once again you haul and you lift,
The fish jumps, jumps and wriggles.
Throw back the net and arrange it properly.
The fish jumps, jumps and wriggles.
But it all is in vain.

Tela il-mewġ, jonfoħ ir-riħ,
Il-luzzu sabet il-qiegħ.
L-aħħar sajda misset ix-xiħ,
Fl’ aħħar is-sajjied sab il-mistrieħ.
L’aħħar sajda, l’ahhar sajda,
Fl’ aħħar is-sajjied sab il-mistrieħ.

The waves rose, the wind blew,
The luzzu found the bottom (of the sea)
The fisherman found his fate on this last fishing trip,
This last fishing trip, this last fishing trip.
At last the fisherman found peace / rest.

Qalb il-paġell, il-gambli u iċ-ċeren
Id-dott u ‘l mazzola il-luzzu tistkenn.
Ħaru ix-Xlukkajri, imniktin,
Ifittxu is-sajjied li ħadhu il-bambin.

Amongst the pagell (common pandora fish), the gambli (shrimps) and ceren (dusky grouper fish)
Id-dott (grouper fish), and the mazzola (piked dogfish) the luzzu is sheltered.
The Xlukkajri (local people of Marsaxlokk), ran out in grief,
Looking for the fisherman that God (Little Jesus) had taken away.

Tela il-mewġ, jonfoħ ir-riħ,
Il-luzzu sabet il-qiegħ.
L-aħħar sajda misset ix-xiħ,
Fl’ aħħar is-sajjied sab il-mistrieħ.
L’aħħar sajda, l’ahhar sajda,
Fl’ aħħar is-sajjied sab il-mistrieħ.

The waves rose, the wind blew,
The luzzu found the bottom (of the sea)
The fisherman found his fate on this last fishing trip,
This last fishing trip, this last fishing trip.
At last the fisherman found peace / rest.

Id-dgħajsa li ħarget tfittxu,
Taqbeż, taqbeż titfarfar,
Imma kollox għalxejn.
Għalxejn.

The dghajsa (another type of Maltese boat) that went out to look for him,
It jumps and jumps and wriggles,
But it all is in vain,
In vain.
Lejla Maltija

Din il-Lejla hekk sabiħa, din il-lejla Maltija
Il-mewġ jgħanni għanja helwa,
Taħt is-sema hekk kaħlanija,
Din il-lejla minn tfuliti,
Din il-lejla Maltija,
Hekk il-bogħod minn pajjiżi,
Ħallini niftakar ftit.

This amazing evening, this Maltese evening,
The waves chant a sweet melody,
Under such a blue blue sky.
This evening I recall from my childhood,
This Maltese evening,
So far away from my homeland,
Allow me to reminiscence a little.

Din il-lejla taħt il-qamar,
Ħafna għerf u ħafna sabar,
Is-sajjied bil-palmi u 'l-lampi,
Jittanta il-lampuki minn taħt il-baħar,
Din il-lejla minn tfuliti,
Din il-lejla Maltija,
Hekk il-bogħod minn pajjiżi,
Ħallini niftakar ftit.

This evening under the moon,
A lot of wisdom and patience,
The fisherman with plan leaves and lamps,
Trying to tempt the lampuki from beneath the sea.
This evening I recall from my childhood,
This Maltese evening,
So far away from my homeland,
Allow me to reminiscence a little.
San Anton Gardens

Built around 1626 by Grandmaster Antoine De Paule as his villa closer to Valetta than Verdala, the palace and the gardens were built to accommodate the Grandmaster's guests and numerous staff. Cooks, food tasters, torch bearers, pantry boys, wig makers, a winder of the clocks, and physicians, as well as a baker to make black bread for feeding his hunting dogs. When Napoleon took over Malta, the Palace became the seat of the French National Assembly in 1799. Under British Rule the place housed the Governor and the Governor General of Malta. In 1882 the gardens were opened to the public. Apart from the pleasant symmetrical paths and groves, the original garden contained many orange groves which the Grandmaster would give as presents to his guests or subjects. Throughout the years however it became a tradition for several heads of state to plant a tree in the garden in memory of their stay in Malta. The result is that the garden is full of trees from around the world, some of which are three centuries old. Together with its aviaries, ponds, fountains, sculptures, the garden hosts a number of events annually together with a permanent exhibition of Maltese traditional crafts including stone sculpture, lace making and glass blowing . Since 1974 the palace has become the residence of the President of Malta. The Palace has even been the Queen Elizabeth II's choice of residence when visiting Malta, both in 1954, 1967 when she was Queen of Malta and in 2005 as Queen of England.
The qroqqa, the laying hen guaranteed the freshest eggs available. Sea urchins make a very tasty seafood dish, whilst the ice blog was the only way to preserve food stuffs in people's home in the Maltese summer. This was the customary pitching cry of the fish hawker, that the fish are so fresh that they are still alive and jumping, that the tuna’s eyes are still red and not glassy as is the case with fish caught the previous day.
(The vegetable seller normally came around with his donkey carring a cart laden with the latest harvest. The kawwara was a head dress in which goods could be carried and later placed on the ground for customers to choose their kapers or other goods. ‘Pay when you can,’ was a customary way of dealing between customer and seller. The sellers came to the village, even to their customer’s homes and the relationship was one of mutual trust and friendship.

The pastizzi can be said to be the most favourite pastry amongst the Maltese, filled with ricotta or peas. They are still popular today, although they are rarely sold in the streets now. The ice-cream sellers still take to the streets, although they normally use vending vans now.)

Where is the bajtar seller, the bajtar with thorns,
The pitch is half a seller’s success,
Where did they go to, why did they forsake you?
(The tinker or tin-man would visit each village and many would be waiting for him to repair their utensils and pots. He normally sharpened knives and rendered other services. The milk vendor would come around with his goats and milk them in front of his clients who would bring their own bottles and cans. The bajtar is the prickly pear which is much appreciated by the Maltese. Literally, this Maltese saying means that the selling pitch is equivalent to a half sold product.

The ċombini known as lace bobbins have been part of Malta and Gozo’s heritage since the 16th century. Lace making as a craft is still highly valued by tourists today and it is fascinating to watch the deft hands and fingers of the lace makers working on the ċombini. Maltese lace is distinguished by the eight pointed cross that is often included in its design done in a whole or cloth stitch. Other characteristics include leaves known as wheat ears or oats. To appreciate the craft one should be aware that Maltese lace is made by stitching sections which are rarely wider than 6 inches.

The barbazzal is a type of Maltese jewellery, normally filigree work, an art that demands a very high level of craftsmanship.
Maltese lace and barbazzal was part and parcel of the wedding tradition, no bride would dare get married without. This is the theme behind Lejla Maltija’s Iċ-Ċombini. Use has also been made of a traditional Maltese wedding chant, “Busu, busu, la tistħiex,” which the guests sing to the newly wedded couple during the wedding celebrations encouraging the couple to kiss. Kiss him, kiss him, don’t be shy. The song makes use of various homemade Maltese percussive instruments and the zaqq, a type of bagpipe, traditionally made from a goat skin. The lyrics with their translation and explanation in English follow:

Ċikki Ċikki iċ-ċombini,
Ċikki Ċikki il-barbazzal,
Il-għarusa minn Ħal-Lija,
U l-għarus minn Ħal-Balzan.

(Ċikki is the onomatopeic sound of the bobbins)
Clicking, clicking the bobbins,
Clicking,
clicking the barbazzal,
The bride from Lija,
The groom from Balzan.

Ċikki Ċikki iċ-ċombini,
Ċikki Ċikki il-barbazzal,
Għax il-libsa trid tkun lesta,
Għax it-tieġ hija l’akbar festa.

Clicking, clicking the bobbins,
Clicking, clicking the barbazzal,
For the dress (the bridal dress) must be ready,
For the wedding is the greatest feast.

Ċikki Ċikki iċ-ċombini,
Ċikki Ċikki il-barbazzal,

Below is an explanation of the lyrics and their illustration of a bygone age in Malta.

Il-Maktur tal-Ħarir Abjad is a white silk handkerchief which was part and parcel of the wedding customs in Malta. A young man would fancy a girl that he had seen and ask her parents for her hand in marriage. Very often he would seek the services of a ħuttaba, a match a match maker. The girl in question would get the chance to see him before the decision is taken. If her opinion was positive she would present him with a white silk handkerchief, normally with lacework all around the edges. He would send her a ring in the shape of a fish and this would seal their engagement.

The problem with this text, which has been adapted from original old tales is that there are some disparities with the above described and official version of Maltese Wedding customs. This text raises questions about individuals who for some reason flouted this sacred tradition.
It obviously mentions the well known custom, which can sometimes still be seen today, of boys lining up on the Strada Irjali, (Valletta’s main street, today known as Republic Street) courting or flirting around with the girls who in their turn are dressed in their Sunday best to impress. One must understand that Valetta, even today is called ‘Il-Belt’ by the locals, meaning ‘the city.’ It used to be the only city, the only place where certain shops and offices would be. Leaving the village to go to the city was no slight or everyday undertaking. Girls sent to do the shopping would start very early in the morning and come back laden with all the articles that they could not find in the village markets.

Il-Maktur

Kont għaddej minn Strada Irjali,
Għadda Ġuvni u ittantani,
Missli il-qoffa biex jinkini,
U fastidju irid itini.

I was walking along Kingsway,
A guy came by and flirted with me,
He touched my basket to tease me,
And embarrassed me.

Lejn ir-raħal nerga ‘mur,
Lil-missieri nugzaħ żgur.
Taħt is-siġra jien kellimtu,
U hemmekk tani il-maktur.

I will go back to the village,
I will surely accuse him to my father,
Under the tree I talked to him,
And there he gave me the handkerchief.

She is embarrassed and she will definitely get into trouble if anyone in the village learns that she has allowed boys to speak to her. However she met him under a tree and the handkerchief was exchanged.
Here there are a couple of disparities, the first of which, I think, can be explained by a little oversight or mistake in print or writing records throughout the ages. I suggest that the last line should read “U hemmekk tajtu il-maktur,” which would read that “There I gave him the handkerchief,” instead of him giving it. This would make sense in the marriage tradition. However the fact that she met him under a tree, gives the impression that it was a secret meeting, one that no family would allow. Why? It took me a long time of searching throughout the web and libraries to come up with some sort of answer. Then I found it in the refrain.

Il-Maktur, tal-Ħarir abjad,
U iċ-Ċurkett tal-fossa blu.

The white silk Handkerchief,
And the ring with the blue stone.

The ring that the bride-to-be would normally receive would be one in the shape of a fish, normally gold. Where does the ring with the blue stone fit in? Finally in some old Maltese Catholic Church records I found an important document. It was a statement by the Church whereby Christians were given permission to wear birthstone rings, that is rings with their birthstone embedded into it as long as it did not interfere with their faith. Hailing from bygone pagan and primitive traditions, it seems that the Church had been fighting a battle with non-Christian traditions amongst its followers. Then there was more. The Arab era in Malta made a lot of impositions on the Maltese, but they never stifled religion or custom. Christians were only made to pay higher taxes and had more restrictions on trade. The resilient Maltese showed off their patriotism and belief by wearing these type of rings and in such manner distinguish themselves from their Arab rulers. This makes this rhyme suddenly brim with a strong passionate Romeo and Juliet type story where two star crossed lovers will come to suffer, meet in secrecy for they come from two opposite families. Maybe this is why the tale has survived. The two possible conclusions are that he was a Christain and that she was a Muslim in Arab ruled Malta, or that she came from a devout Catholic family whilst he belonged to masonic or pagan sects as they might be described although the truth is that by wearing such rings it was more like a trend, a fashion statement. In a very devout medieval Malta such a trend would attract the hatred, aggression and intolerance of all.

Minn ġo din it-triq se nerġa ngħaddi,
Ġo din it-triq se nerġa immure,
Għax hemmekk għandi il-ħanini,
Ixxejjirli il-maktur.

Once again I’ll walk along this street,
Through this street again I’ll go,
Because there is my darling,
Waving the handkerchief.

Il-Maktur, tal-Ħarir abjad,
U iċ-Ċurkett tal-fossa blu.

The white silk Handkerchief,
And the ring with the blue stone.

Minn ġo din it-triq għaddejt u ngħaddi,
Ġo din it-triq se nerġa immure,
Għax hemmekk għandi il-ħanini,
Ixxejjirli il-maktur.

I’ve been through this street and I’ll return again,
Through this street again I’ll go,
Because there is my darling,
Waving the handkerchief.

There is a certain manner in the way that this is written. The repeated emphasis on walking through the same street again and again seems to betray a certain sorrow. Did the lovers meet an untimely end? Did they suffer terrible consequences? Did nothing come out of their exchange of mutual love? Has their secret been buried with them in their grave?

Il-Maktur, tal-Ħarir abjad,
U iċ-Ċurkett tal-fossa blu.

The white silk Handkerchief,
And the ring with the blue stone.
Is-Sirena
Lyrics and translation: Mario Cordina

Is-Sirena tolfoq u tingħi karba,
Min jaf lil-minn ser tolqot din id-darba?
Beraq u rgħad tal-polvri fil-Port il-Kbir,
Din il-ġzira zgħira, ulieda ta’ kuraġġ kbir.

The siren sobs and wails in sorrow,
Who knows who’s turn it is this time?
Gunpowder lightning and thunder in the Grand Harbour (Valetta’s Port)
This little island, its outstanding children full of great courage.

Ara ġejja il-mewt għalik,
Biex taqlik, biex tixwik,
Ara ġejja, ara ġejja,
Din id-daqqa min tagħilek?

This is a child’s chant used during play. They sing this tune and at the end one of the children is slapped by one of the others. The child has to guess who it is. However I find the words connected with death sung by children ringing a dark note and probably rooted in Malta’s wartime experience. In this song it rings out with great irony.
The translation reads:
See Death coming to pick you up,
It will boil, it will roast you,
See Death come, see it come,
Who slapped (hit) you?

Is-sirena tolfoq u tingħi karba,
Għal-dawk ulieda li illum ġew imdarba,
Il-Festa ta Santa Marija dalwaqt magħna,
Il-Konvoy riesaq biex jitmagħna.

The siren sobs and wails in sorrow,
In mourning for her children who have lost their life today,
The Feast of Santa Marija will soon come,
The convoy approaches, it will feed us.
The Convoy which actually made it through the Axis barrage into the port saved a starved nation from surrender. The convoy made it into the harbour iin stages during the month of August 1942. The Ohio made it on the 15th August and the convoy has always been dubbed The Santa Maria Convoy.
The Day of the Feast (The Feast Day)

The day of the feast, it seems as if the war has come, with bombs and shooting.
The day of the feast, it seems that the war has come, the band comes out armed with brass.
On the day of the feast she put on a brand new dress and shoes with heels.
(The infernal box, literally translated is the name given to the culmination of the popular fireworks show - normally a series of firecrackers going off in sequence. Watch them party, today the day of the feast.
(The word jixxalaw comes from lunacy, crazy, wild - to party out of control.)

The statue and the pavilions,
The decorations and the rice paper and the 'armar'.
But poor Joey drank a little too much,
He did not feel up to it so he stayed at home.
(The decorations - Tiżjin: are normally very colorful with the flags of the city, Parish, Band Club or Saint - sometimes even the local football club. They are normally flags or cloth, paper, tinsel, lights etc, hanging from balconies, roofs or strung across the street. The 'Armar' is normally of a more sacred nature. This type of decoration features pedestals with statues and effigies of Saints and Angels. As far as drinking is concerned, the banda march through the streets normally takes from 9am to 3pm in the summer heat. So be warned!)

You can see all this for yourself on Youtube - The video features the events and goings on during the Festa.
The day of the feast. The summer months in Malta have traditionally been associated with Parish Church feasts. Apart from the religious celebrations including a grand mass and solemn procession with bearers carrying the life size effigy of the patron saint, the locals also set up colorful and less religious events during the week prior to the procession. The climax is when the local band clubs take to the streets and people join in to sing and dance and party. Fireworks are also part of the program me, including fireworks which are called gigifogu - basically cartwheels which are the pride of the local fireworks factories. There could be as much as five such festas in different parishes during one weekend. The video was taken during three such feasts : San Lawrenz in Birgu, San Gejtanu in Hamrun and Santa Maria in Mosta 2013.
Parish Church celebrates the feast of it's patron saint. The large
number of Churches means that there could be as many as four or five of
these feasts per weekend. The feast includes brass bands parading
through the streets of the Parish starting on Friday evening, Saturday
Morning and Evening with the solemn Parish procession on Sunday.
Traditionally the parishers take a day off the following Monday to
invade the beach for a full day. The trip to the beach would take a long
time as the buses - ix-xarabank were slow and the roads rough. For
islanders living in the centre or in the south - the sandy beaches of
Mellieha were far away and not an everyday option. This meant that Ix-Xalata
was a grand affair with people carrying bags of food and drink,
umbrellas, together with their children and neighbours, finally invading
the beach till sunset.

Lejla Maltija has published it's first official recording entitled "Il-Guvni Hasan" It is about the well known Legend connected to the cave known as "Ghar Hasan" off Birzebbugia in Malta. There is a new twist to this tale - age old enemies The Turk and the Maltese are foiled by a Romeo and Juliet tragic love affair. A Turkish youth, Hasan, falls in love with a Maltese girl. There is no way that either party will agree to such a bond, so he kidnaps her. She tries to escape, but to no avail. In the song the girl appeals to Hasan to set her free because if her father finds them, Hasan would surely be hanged. Indeed the islanders do find the couple in their cave. "Il-ġuvni Ħasan, iben l-għedewwa," 'the young man Hasan, the enemy's son,' "il-mewt ħaqqu sewwa," 'he really deserves to die.' Hasan runs to the edge of the cave which overlooks a sheer drop to the sea and ends his life on the treacherous rocks below. The girl follows suit. "Ġrajja ta dieqa, imħabba u żgħożija." A story of sorrow, love and youth, a story of man's folly.
In Maltese the lyrics by Mario Cordina go as follows:

Il-Ġuvni Ħasan

Ra tfajla ħelwa u żgħażugża, Ħasan.
Mill l’ewwel ħa grazzja magħha, Ħasan.
Waħħala f’rasu li jisraqha, Ħasan,
F’għar imwarrab mar ħabiha, Ħasan.

It-tfajla bdiet tibki,
“Missieri ifittixni,
U meta jsibni,
Ser jonxroq żgur, ħallini mmur.”

”Naf li togħbodu it-Torok,” qalla Ħasan,
”Imma jien lilek inħobbok,” qalla Ħasan
It-tfajla bħall-peprina,
Ħamra u samranija,
Qed nisma il-passi,
Ħasan ġejjien, Ħasan miskin.

Il-ġuvni Ħasan, iben l-għedewwa,
Il-ġuvni Ħasan, il-mewt ħaqqu sewwa

Fil-fixla imwerwer gera lejn ix-xifer, Ħasan
Qabeż għall-isfel għall-fuq il-blat kiefer, Ħasan

L’ istorja tispiċċa,
Bid-dmugħ fuq wiċċa,
Bikkmet is-sajf
Hekk kif qabżet warajh
Iva qabżet warajh.

Il-ġuvni Ħasan, u ix-xebba Maltija
Ġrajja ta dieqa, imħabba u żgħożija
Qalb il-Buzbiez is an orginal tune by Lejla Maltija performed by Mario Cordina on the flute. Pictures by Anidroc.
The wooden flute is one of Malta's folk instruments as is the case with most ancient cultures. The tune is based on Maltese traditional flute harmonies. The pictures are mounted in such a way as to draw attention to the various instruments playing together in this piece. Try to follow which instrument is being emphasised by the pictures.
between 1862 and 1868 on Tal-Horr hill which had already been a burial ground
since prehistoric times, this monumental cemetery the largest on the islands,
has a beautiful Gothic Chapel unique in Malta. From 1869 onwards, burials
in churches were prohibited except for special cases as Bishops and Cloistered
nuns. This cemetery is full of old Mausoleums and statues in marble and bronze and also contains 268 commonwealth graves from the two world
wars. The chapel is run by the Capuchin friars of Marsa under the
Authority of the department of Health. Its architect was E.Luigi Galizia, the

rather a burial place mostly for the towns and villages in the vicinity which
had no burial grounds of their own. There was also a reluctance to use it at

its exceptional use of topography - with the cemetery planned very

The starting point was the Dominican chapel where the nun Teresa Parlar

eight - surely a record as far as hunger strikes go. Parlar got into some trouble with the

Perhaps the
most poignant monument is the one put up by a travelling businessman who, upon
his unexpected return from abroad, so surprised his mother that she apparently
died suddenly on seeing him. This is one of the finest sculptures at Addolorata
even though it still has shrapnel damage (visible lower right in the photo

artistic merit is the Sette Giugno monument which recalls the 1919 riots and
contains the remains of four of the victims. The monument was designed by the
Russian émigré artist Boris Edwards and recalls the style of our own Antonio
Sciortino. Incidentally the cemetery did contain a few funerary sculptures by
Sciortino himself but these have apparently all been stolen. An interesting article on Boris Edwards can

One other oddity is the tomb of an unfortunate boy who was killed by a fallen brick. The actual brick that killed him was incorporated in the statue adorning his tomb. Incidentally the unlucky boy was nowhere near as ugly as the tifel tal-precett represented on the tomb.

A last oddity and infamy - there is apparently only one illegally dug tomb in
the whole cemetery and this belongs to a deceased former politician who was
notorious enough in his life. It is not pretty to speak ill of the departed but
to carry one's arrogance into the next life is something else…

Lejla Maltija powered by Mario Cordina has burst into life
with a premier concert of original music, folklore, visuals, information
and food from Mario's native island Malta. Performed live at Rocker
club in Szczecin, it has proved to be a success and who knows where they
will go from here.

The music concept is to combine Maltese folklore and musical themes into different genres, give it a more contemporary feel to attract today's audiences. The lyrical content is about Malta's past. legends, customs, folklore, especially about traditions lost or dying out. Together with the visuals chosen, this is an attempt to educate and demonstrate that Malta has more than just beaches and sun to offer foreigners. A proud declaration from an island nation from a Maltese citizen abroad.
